My Tramp

Have you ever wondered if Angels are real?

It says in  Hebrews 1 verse 14 that, 'Angels are ministering spirits sent to help those who will inherit salvation.'

One day when I was nine years old I was alone in the house, which was very unusual. We lived in a bungalow with a long sloping drive towards the road.

A knock came on the back door and when I opened it there stood a tramp!  He had the most amazing eyes, they were cornflower blue, they sparkled and were alive!  I was totally captivated by them.

He politely asked for a glass of water and I enquired if he would like orange juice instead, and would he like a cheese and onion sandwich?               "Yes please, thank you, I'll sit on the wall outside."

I prepared his juice and sandwich and added an orange which I couldn't carry so left it in the kitchen.  It was a beautiful summer day and we sat together on the low drive wall.  I have no memory of our conversation but when he had finished he stood and said,

"I'll be off now, thank you very much."

I suddenly remembered his orange and cried, "Wait a minute I have an orange for you." and ran into the kitchen to get it.  It must have taken me all of two seconds but when I emerged again, he had vanished!

I ran down the drive to catch him up but he was nowhere to be seen.  I looked up and down the road, all to no avail; he was gone!  Clutching the abandoned orange I trudged back up the drive with such a feeling of sadness and disappoinment.  Such was my disappointment, that I told no one of his visit.

Some 45 years later I was reading the book of Hebrews in my Bible, when in Chapter 13 verse 2, I read, 'Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels unawares.'

I was so surprised! That's who he was, an angel, and that's why he disappeared so quickly!  I have since learnt that angelic visitations are not so unusual and many of God's children can witness to such encounters.

This memory came back while wondering what my next painting would be.  I was very concerned to get his eyes just right, they were so amazing; I'm afraid this image does not do them credit.  When I finally took the painting to be photographed by Stuart, he called to me, "Come and look at this!" From the camera image, my tramp's eyes beamed out just as they had done all those years ago!

The angel verse is written on his pocket - I needed to let people know that he really was an angel. That's when I say the feathers from his wing sticking out of the hole in his pocket.

All children have a guardian angel and woe betide any one who leads them astray, Jesus has a special word to say about them.

"But anyone who causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depth of the sea."

 Matthew 18 verse 6.
